Learning Matters is a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping school age children with learning differences become successful learners. Learning Matters is capable of providing assessment and remediation for students’ learning needs. Staff is available to assist students with reading, writing, mathematics, speech and language, and social and emotional functioning. We are also involved in raising public awareness about learning differences through teacher training programs, conferences and workshops.

It is estimated that as many as 30 million school-going children in India experience learning differences, nearly 20% of the entire school going population. These are bright children, sometimes even gifted, who struggle at school as a result of differences in their brain wiring. Academically, this makes it difficult for them to read, write, and/or do math. Additionally, some of these children struggle with spoken language and some even struggle with reading social cues and getting along with others, affecting their ability to make lasting friendships. At times, children receive diagnoses such as dyslexia or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Often these are children with uneven learning profiles who may excel or achieve in one area but fail to perform in another. For instance, a child with a learning difference might be able to perform complex calculations in her head but fail to develop a basic sight vocabulary for fluent reading. Similarly, a child with a learning difference might have extensive knowledge of rocket ships but be hard pressed to locate his notebook for science class (or his socks for that matter!). They are often mislabeled as “slow learners,” “lazy” or “stupid” and suffer needless humiliation. Accurate and timely help for such children enables them to develop necessary skills in reading, writing, and math. It also helps them to maintain self-esteem, acquire a sense of mastery and competency and paves the way for a brighter future that would otherwise be dimmed by repeated failure.
